Atlas of Exchange Ecologies

A curated compendium of transactions as living specimens — classified, illustrated, and annotated in the manner of the great naturalists. Each plate depicts a biome where exchange grows, blooms, and decays.

Specimen I — Negotiatio Aurea

The Golden Negotiation

A perennial of the trading biome, Negotiatio aurea thrives wherever two parties meet in good faith. Its seeds are promises; its fruit, settled terms. The plant reproduces through spirals of counter-offer, each whorl tighter than the last until the bloom opens into agreement.

Kingdom
Mercatura
Family
Contractaceae
Habitat
Marketplaces · counters · long dinners
Season
All, with vigorous spring growth

Field Note Pollinated by trust; wilts rapidly under conditions of concealment.

Specimen II — Donatio Cyanea

The Cyan Giving

A delicate flower of the gift biome, Donatio cyanea blooms only when no return is expected. Its pale filaments luminesce more intensely the less they are watched. In captivity — behind ledgers and receipts — the plant loses its glow within a single season.

Kingdom
Mercatura
Family
Gratiaceae
Habitat
Households · festivals · quiet kindnesses
Season
Cold months, holidays, partings

Field Note Fragrance intensifies in the absence of witnesses.

Specimen III — Obligatio Magenta

The Binding Debt

A climbing vine of the debt biome, Obligatio magenta sends out tendrils that harden into chains over the cycles of interest. Its berries are luminous but bitter; crushed, they release a magenta ink used historically to record promises that cannot be spoken aloud.

Kingdom
Mercatura
Family
Vinculaceae
Habitat
Courts · banks · inherited ledgers
Season
Perennial — rarely rests

Field Note Pruning discouraged; roots grow deeper when cut.

Specimen IV — Permutatio Ambrata

The Amber Exchange

A symbiotic pair of plants of the barter biome, Permutatio ambrata grows only in paired specimens whose roots entwine. Neither plant fruits without the other; both wither if separated by law or distance. Their flowers open toward each other at equal hours.

Kingdom
Mercatura
Family
Reciprocaceae
Habitat
Borders · harbors · village greens
Season
Follows the moon more than the sun

Field Note Cannot be cultivated alone; demands a willing neighbor.
