## Aesthetics and Tone

genshin.day is a **daily almanac of elemental rebellions** — a single, slow-reading broadsheet that opens each morning with a new "primordial entry," dated and signed, written in the voice of a classically-educated saboteur who happens to keep a diary about the weather of the soul. The word *genshin* is read here in its older, looser register — 元神, *primordial spirit*, not the game — and the site behaves like an heirloom paper almanac that has been *contaminated* by a film of holographic foil. Garamond sets the body text the way a 1640s Antwerp printer would have set it; crystalline pastel blobs drift behind the type the way oil drifts across a puddle on a metal grate; and a small rebellious annotation hand crosses out, underlines, and re-titles the printed text mid-paragraph, the way a reader who disagrees with the almanac would deface their own copy.

The mood is **edgy-rebellious-but-quiet**. Not graffiti, not punk-poster, not glitch-as-spectacle. The rebellion here is the rebellion of someone who *reads carefully and disagrees with what they read* — who marks up the page in a coloured pencil that happens to be holographic, who scratches "no" into the margin of an authority's pronouncement, who knows the original is well-typeset and refuses to mistreat it but will not let it pass unchallenged. The aesthetic register is **classical Garamond plate + iridescent foil + pastel crystalline mist + a single defiant marginal hand**. The page should feel like a beautifully-produced first edition that someone has *lived inside* and *argued with*, not a marketing asset.

The visual inspiration sits at the intersection of four very specific reference points:
- Aldine-press Italian Garamond italic specimens from the 1530s, photographed with raking light so the impression in the paper still shows.
- Holographic dichroic film stretched over museum vitrines — the way the colour changes from rose to mint to lilac as the visitor walks past.
- The soft, nearly-coloured pastel of Rosalba Carriera's late pastel portraits — mauve, dusty mint, periwinkle, blush — applied here as drifting blob fields, never as flat colour.
- Marginalia from the Boston Public Library's annotated Voltaire, where the 18th-century reader's pen is sharper than the printed text and frequently crueller.

The page does **not** chase aurora gradients, neon glow, hand-drawn doodles, or tropical fish. It chases **iridescence as restraint** and **classical typography as the field on which dissent is registered**. Holographic here is a *thin film*, never a backdrop — it lives on the *edges* of crystalline shards, the *underline* under a Garamond italic, the *gutter rule* between columns, and on a single foiled date stamp at the top. Pastel here is a *mist*, never a flood — it pools in organic blobs behind the type, the way breath fogs a window, never replacing the warm cream paper field beneath.

The voice is **edgy-rebellious** in the literary sense (Diderot, Mary Wollstonecraft, the angry footnote in a 19th-century pamphlet), not the punk-graphic sense. It is the voice of a reader who knows the original very well and disagrees with it on principle. Every entry is dated, signed, and refusable — the reader is invited to *argue back* in a margin field that uses the same coloured-pencil holographic stroke as the printer's own annotations.

## Layout Motifs and Structure

The page is organised on a **strict five-row F-pattern grid**, executed in a way the corpus has not seen — F-pattern (3% in registry) used as a *literary-broadsheet* armature rather than a marketing-page eye-track diagram. The F-pattern lives at three scales simultaneously: the page-as-a-whole reads as one large F (a heavy horizontal headline bar at the top, a heavy horizontal date-and-signature bar at the third-row position, a long vertical reading column anchoring the left edge); each individual entry on the page is a small F (entry headline → annotation strip → reading column); and the entries are *staggered* down the long left column with their annotation strips reading rightward, so the eye traces a sequence of nested Fs from top to bottom of the broadsheet.

**The full-page armature.** A single-column 720px reading measure runs down the **left third** of the viewport from row 1 to row 5. On wide screens this column does **not** centre — it stays anchored to the left, with the right two-thirds of the page given over to **margin matter**: the holographic date stamp, the rebellious annotation hand, the crystalline shard-cluster glyphs, and the floating organic-blob pastel mist. On narrow screens (under 760px) the reading column reflows to full-width and the margin matter collapses underneath each entry as a continuation strip. The reading column is set in 16/24 Cormorant Garamond, justified with hyphenation enabled, and the right-hand margin receives all the energy of the design.

**Five rows, named, distinct.**

- **Row 1 — Mast.** A 12vh-tall holographic foil bar bearing the wordmark *genshin.day* set in Cormorant Garamond italic at 88px, with an iridescent CSS-gradient background-clipped to the type itself. Below it sits the volume/issue colophon — *Vol. III · No. 251 · stamped at dawn* — set in 13/16 Cormorant small-caps. The mast's lower edge is a single 1px hairline rule that holds a holographic gradient stop. No nav lives in row 1. (No nav is present anywhere on the page; see *Prompts*.)

- **Row 2 — The Day's Entry.** A single F-pattern node: an entry headline (32–40px Garamond italic), an annotation strip immediately right of the headline (rebellious hand, see *Imagery*), and a body reading column underneath. Each visit, the day's entry is the topmost (and visually heaviest) node. It always carries a pastel crystalline shard sitting in the right margin — a different shard each day, drawn from a fixed library of 14.

- **Row 3 — The Date Stamp & Margin Lattice.** A horizontal strip running the full width, holding the day's date in a holographic-foiled circular stamp (96px diameter), three tiny pastel blob clouds drifting at three different parallax speeds, and a thin gutter rule. This is the *crossbar* of the page-scale F and the visual anchor of the whole composition.

- **Row 4 — The Almanac Stack.** Six previous-day entries, each reduced to a small F-pattern node (small headline → small annotation strip → 4-line excerpt → "read in full" italic underline-draw link). The six entries are stacked vertically along the left column with their annotation strips alternating right-margin attachment points, producing a soft pendulum reading rhythm.

- **Row 5 — The Colophon.** A signature line in Garamond italic ("set, stamped, and signed at dawn by the genshin.day press"), a holographic foil hairline, and the year imprint. No social links. No newsletter form. No CTA. The page ends as a printed broadsheet ends — with the printer's mark and the year.

**Spatial relationships.** The right two-thirds of the page is treated as a *living margin*, not as content space. It receives the floating pastel blobs, the crystalline shards, and the marginal hand — but never primary text. This is a deliberate inversion of the corpus's overwhelming preference for full-bleed (93%) and card-grid (85%) layouts: here, **two-thirds of the page exists to make the left third feel weighted and serious.**

**Negative space rule.** The blob mist must never *touch* the body type. A 12px pastel-aware exclusion buffer renders around the reading column, computed at runtime from the bounding boxes of all currently-visible paragraphs. Blobs that would intrude into the buffer fade to 0% opacity for the duration of the intrusion.

**The reading column never breaks into cards.** No card-grid anywhere. No bento. No three-up feature row. The page is a *broadsheet*, and the broadsheet has exactly one reading column and one set of margins.

## Typography and Palette

**Type (Google Fonts, exact family names).**

- **EB Garamond** — *body, italic, headlines, all Garamond-classic moments.* This is the primary voice of the page. Used at 16/24 for body, 32–40px italic for entry headlines, 88px italic for the wordmark, and 13/16 small-caps for the colophon. EB Garamond is the most faithful free Garamond on Google Fonts and its italic carries the right Renaissance verve. Weights: 400, 500 italic, 600.
- **Cormorant Garamond** — *display italic only*, used for the wordmark in row 1 and for the day's entry headline. Cormorant's italic is more theatrical than EB Garamond's, and the dichotomy (display Cormorant / body EB Garamond) gives the page two registers of the same classical voice. Weight: 500 italic, 600 italic.
- **Caveat** — *the rebellious annotation hand only.* Caveat is a Google Fonts hand-script that looks like a real reader's pen. Used at 18–22px for marginal hand annotations: the strikethroughs, the "no", the underlines, the date in a margin. Weight: 500. Used sparingly — perhaps 12 instances across the whole page.

**Type rules.** Body type is justified with hyphenation enabled (`hyphens: auto`, `hanging-punctuation: first last`). Headlines are set ragged-right. Small-caps in the colophon are *real* small-caps (`font-feature-settings: "smcp"` on EB Garamond's variable axis), not fake. The wordmark uses CSS `background-clip: text` over a holographic gradient, with a 0.5px outline rendered as a `text-shadow` stack to keep the iridescent colour from bleeding into the surrounding paper.

**Palette (exact hex values).**

The palette is **pastel mist over warm cream paper, with a holographic foil accent system layered on top**. Pastels are deliberately desaturated and warm-shifted, never candy-bright.

- `#FAF6EE` — *cream paper.* The page background. Warm white, slightly yellow, the colour of a 1640s book that has not yellowed yet but never was bleached.
- `#1A1A1F` — *iron-gall ink.* The body type colour. Not pure black; a warm near-black with a hint of indigo, modelled on the iron-gall ink that has aged in the books we are imitating.
- `#E8DDF0` — *lilac mist.* Pastel blob colour 1. A dusty mauve-lavender, soft, the colour of a Carriera shadow.
- `#D8E8E0` — *mint frost.* Pastel blob colour 2. A pale dusty mint, almost grey-green.
- `#F0DDE2` — *blush dawn.* Pastel blob colour 3. A barely-pink rose, the colour of dawn light through linen.
- `#DEE2F0` — *periwinkle haze.* Pastel blob colour 4. A pale dusty blue-violet, the colour of the sky at the moment before sunrise.
- `#F2E8D8` — *bone shell.* Pastel blob colour 5. A warm dusty cream, slightly more saturated than the paper, used where two blobs overlap.

The five pastels rotate as a palette — every blob picks one and softly cross-fades to the next over a 14-second cycle.

**Holographic foil system (used only on edges and accents, never as fills).**

The foil is built as a CSS `linear-gradient` with five stops, slowly rotating in hue:

- `#FFB7DE` (rose foil)
- `#C8B7FF` (lilac foil)
- `#A9F0E2` (mint foil)
- `#FFE9A8` (champagne foil)
- `#B9DDFF` (sky foil)

The gradient is applied to: the wordmark (background-clipped to text), the date stamp's outer ring, the gutter rules between rows, the crystalline shard outlines (1px stroke), and the underline-draw beneath italic links. Foil **never** appears as a flat fill; it is always a thin edge or a clipped stroke. The hue rotates 6° per second on hover-active accents, freezes on `prefers-reduced-motion`.

**Annotation accent.**

- `#7B3F8F` — *hand purple.* The colour of the rebellious marginal hand. A Carriera-pastel shadow violet, dark enough to read against cream but soft enough to feel like a coloured pencil rather than a felt-tip pen. Used for Caveat hand-annotations and for the strikethrough hairline through any printed phrase that has been disagreed with.

**Total declared colour count: 12 distinct hex values.** All twelve are intentional; none are placeholder.

## Imagery and Motifs

**No photography.** None. Photography appears in 99% of the corpus and the page would be poorer for joining that majority. The page carries imagery exclusively through three custom-rendered systems:

**1. Crystalline shards (motif: crystalline, 8% in registry — the structural visual language of the page).**

Fourteen distinct hand-drawn (in SVG) crystalline shards live in the right-margin field. Each shard is a 6–11-sided faceted polygon with a pastel-fill interior (one of the five pastels at 30–45% opacity) and a holographic-foil 1px stroke outline. Shards range from 80px to 240px on their longest axis. They are *never* perfectly geometric — each face has a 2–4px Bezier wobble to feel hand-cut, never machine-printed. The shard library covers seven elemental moods (storm, ember, frost, dust, salt, dew, ash), each in two variations. The day's entry picks one shard at page-load time, deterministic from the day's date, and that shard sits in the margin of row 2. The previous-day entries in row 4 each carry a smaller (60–80px) shard at the right end of their annotation strips.

The shards' holographic strokes do **not** rotate hue continuously — they rotate hue *on cursor approach*, computed from a smooth 240px proximity field. Cursor-follow is reframed here: instead of *parallax* or *magnetic attraction*, the cursor changes the *iridescence angle* of the nearest shard. This is the only cursor-reactive behaviour on the page.

**2. Organic pastel blobs (imagery: organic-blobs, 9% in registry — the atmospheric background system).**

Twenty-two organic blobs drift across the right two-thirds of the page in a slow parallax field. Each blob is a CSS `border-radius` morphing shape (eight-corner radius animated independently across a 40-second loop) filled with one of the five pastels at 22–38% opacity, with a Gaussian blur of 60–110px. Blobs do not have outlines. They drift slowly along bezier paths, never repeating exactly, with a `cubic-bezier(0.34, 1.16, 0.64, 1)` *spring* easing on their per-frame transform updates — this is where the seed's *spring* pattern lives, applied to *atmospheric drift* rather than to UI elements. Spring-easing here is felt as the *gentle overshoot* of a blob arriving at its bezier waypoint; it is *not* felt as a UI bounce.

When two blobs overlap, the overlap region renders in `bone shell` (#F2E8D8) via SVG `feBlend mode="multiply"`. This produces soft, paper-realistic colour mixing — not digital RGB addition.

The blobs respect the reading-column exclusion buffer absolutely. A blob that drifts within 12px of a paragraph's bounding box fades smoothly to 0% opacity over a 220ms `cubic-bezier(0.4, 0, 0.2, 1)`, then resumes its drift on the far side and fades back in at the same rate. The reader will never see a blob touching the type.

**3. The rebellious annotation hand (motif: edgy-rebellious, expressed visually).**

Roughly twelve marginal annotations across the page are rendered in **hand purple** (#7B3F8F) Caveat. Each annotation is one of:
- A short word ("no", "false", "again", "see vol. II", "but is it?").
- A wavy-underline drawn as a smooth hand-traced SVG path beneath an italic phrase in the printed text.
- A hand-drawn arrow connecting an annotation to a phrase.
- A strikethrough hairline crossing out a single word in the printed text — never crossing out a whole sentence.

The annotations are not interactive (they are not buttons) but they *do* react: on hover within the page, the rebellious annotation under the cursor wiggles by ±2° on a 600ms spring-easing loop, as if the reader has just leaned in to read it more carefully. This is the only spring-hover on the page.

**4. The holographic date stamp.**

A single 96px-diameter circular stamp at the centre of row 3, drawn in CSS as concentric rings:
- Outer ring (1.5px): holographic-foil gradient stroke.
- Middle band: cream paper.
- Inner ring (0.5px): hand purple stroke.
- Centre: today's date in EB Garamond small-caps (e.g. *9·MAY·MMXXVI*).

The stamp is rotated by –3.5° to feel hand-pressed. It is the page's **only** decorative compositional anchor, and the only place where the holographic gradient appears as a closed, ring-shaped form rather than a thin edge.

**Decorative patterns.** None. No floral wreaths, no Art Deco fans, no Memphis squiggles, no waveforms. The page has *only* shards, blobs, hand-annotations, and the foil stamp. The aesthetic restraint is part of the design.

## Prompts for Implementation

Build genshin.day as **one HTML document, one CSS file, one ES module, one SVG sprite sheet (the 14 crystalline shards), and one favicon SVG (a single rose-foil shard on cream)**. No framework. No bundler. No raster images. No photography. No video. No WebGL. No canvas. No webfont self-host (use Google Fonts CDN — `EB+Garamond:ital,wght@0,400..600;1,400..600&family=Cormorant+Garamond:ital,wght@1,500;1,600&family=Caveat:wght@500&display=swap`). The whole page is **one F-pattern broadsheet, one drifting blob field, fourteen crystalline shards, twelve hand-annotations, one foil date stamp, and one cursor-driven iridescence field**.

**Storytelling spine.** The reader arrives at the page at any time of day and is greeted by a single dated, signed entry written in the voice of the genshin.day press — a paragraph or two of dense classical prose about an *element of the day* (the storm, the dust, the dew, the ember, the salt, the frost, the ash). The entry is introduced by an italic Garamond headline, sits in a 720px reading column on the left third of the page, and is *visibly disagreed with* in three or four places by a rebellious hand-annotation in purple Caveat. Below the day's entry, six older entries from previous days are stacked, each reduced to a small F-pattern node with its own headline, hand-annotation, four-line excerpt, and shard. The page closes with a hand-set colophon at the bottom. There is **no nav, no signup, no pricing, no testimonials, no logo strip, no social links, no contact form, no FAQ, no CTA, no statistics, no card grid, no bento, no hero photo, no marquee.** The clickable affordances are exactly six: each previous-day entry's "read in full" italic underline-draw link. Each click *reveals the full entry inline* with a 540ms ease-out expansion — it does not navigate. There is no separate page or route. The site is one document, one day, and a small archive that opens in place.

**F-pattern execution (layout: f-pattern, 3% in registry).** The five-row armature described under *Layout Motifs* is implemented with CSS Grid as a `grid-template-rows: auto auto auto 1fr auto` and `grid-template-columns: minmax(720px, 33vw) 1fr` declaration. The reading column is the first grid column; the right two-thirds (margin field) is the second grid column. Row 3 (date stamp + lattice) breaks out of this grid via `grid-column: 1 / -1` and runs full-width. Below 760px the grid collapses to a single column and the margin field stacks underneath each entry. The F-pattern is preserved in the small (per-entry) scale even on narrow screens.

**Holographic foil rendering (aesthetic: holographic, 10% in registry).** All foil is rendered with a single shared CSS variable `--foil-gradient`, defined as:

The gradient is applied via `background: var(--foil-gradient)` on accent elements with `background-clip: text` for type, or as `border-image-source` for ringed forms. A single CSS `@keyframes foil-rotate` cycles the gradient's `background-position` from 0% to 200% over 18 seconds, pausing on `prefers-reduced-motion`. **Never** apply the foil as a flat fill on a large surface — it must always be edge, stroke, or clipped to text. Large foil fills produce a mid-2010s rainbow-unicorn feeling that this design is explicitly refusing.

**Pastel blob system (imagery: organic-blobs, 9%).** The 22 blobs are absolutely-positioned `<div>`s with `border-radius` values like `42% 58% 64% 36% / 38% 50% 50% 62%` and a per-blob CSS variable `--blob-radius` that animates independently across an 40-second cycle by tweening the eight radius values. Each blob's `transform: translate3d(x, y, 0)` updates per-frame on `requestAnimationFrame`, computed from a per-blob bezier path stored as four control points in a JS array. The bezier easing is the spring `cubic-bezier(0.34, 1.16, 0.64, 1)` applied to the parametric `t` of the path traversal — this is the only place spring physics live on the page. Blob opacity is computed per-frame from a single `blob-near-text(blob, paragraphs)` function that returns 0 if the blob's bounding circle intersects any visible paragraph's bounding rectangle (with a 12px buffer), 1 otherwise, smoothed across a 220ms ease.

**Crystalline shard system (motif: crystalline, 8%).** The 14 shards live in one SVG sprite sheet with `<symbol>` elements, each shard's polygon defined as a `<path>` with subtle Bezier wobble on each face. Shards are placed in the right margin via absolutely-positioned `<svg><use href="#shard-N"/></svg>`. The 1px holographic stroke is rendered by setting `stroke: url(#foil-gradient)` on the path, where `<linearGradient id="foil-gradient">` is defined inline in the sprite sheet with its hue rotating on a per-shard `transform: rotate()` animation triggered by cursor proximity. The proximity field is computed in JS as `1 - clamp(distance / 240, 0, 1)` and applied to each shard's `--shard-hue-rotate` CSS variable. **No** shard hue-rotates on idle — only on cursor proximity. This makes the cursor feel like a small light source moving across iridescent edges, never like a magnetic field tugging at UI.

**Cursor.** The default OS cursor remains. No custom cursor element. No cursor-trail. No magnetic attraction. The cursor's only effect is the proximity-driven iridescence rotation on the nearest shard, which is *visible on the shard*, not on the cursor itself. This is a deliberate refusal of the corpus's cursor-follow saturation (85%).

**Hand annotation behaviour (tone: edgy-rebellious, 2%).** Each of the ~12 hand-annotations is a `<span class="hand">` containing Caveat type, optionally wrapped around or preceded by an inline SVG path (for arrows, underlines, strikethroughs). On hover within the document body (not on the annotation itself), the *nearest* hand-annotation within a 320px proximity radius wiggles by ±2° on a 600ms spring `cubic-bezier(0.34, 1.45, 0.64, 1)` loop. The wiggle dampens to 0° after 1.4 seconds without further hover-proximity. This is the **only** spring-hover micro-interaction on the page.

**Reading column behaviour.** The 720px reading column is `max-width: 720px` with body text justified, `hyphens: auto`, `hanging-punctuation: first last`, `text-rendering: optimizeLegibility`, and `font-feature-settings: "kern", "liga", "smcp"` where small-caps are needed. The column does not animate on scroll. There is **no** scroll-snap, no parallax-on-text, no fade-reveal-on-paragraph. Type is *given* on first paint and remains. Only the margin field (blobs, shards, annotation wiggle) animates. This is a deliberate refusal of the corpus's scroll-triggered saturation — the reader should be able to read the page like a printed broadsheet, with no pretextual entrance choreography demanding attention before they can read.

**Date stamp behaviour.** The foil stamp's outer ring rotates its hue over 18 seconds, pauses on `prefers-reduced-motion`, and on hover *reverses* its rotation direction with a 320ms ease. The date inside the stamp updates client-side from `new Date()` at load and never updates again during the session. The stamp is decorative, not interactive (no click action).

**The "read in full" interaction.** Each of the six previous-day entries has a Garamond italic phrase reading "*read in full*" with a holographic underline drawn beneath it via SVG `stroke-dasharray` reveal on first viewport entry (a single 1400ms ease, *not* on hover). On click, the entry's body expands inline below the excerpt over 540ms `cubic-bezier(0.22, 1, 0.36, 1)`, the underline reverses its draw, and the phrase changes to *fold away*. This is the page's only stateful interaction.

**Reduced motion.** With `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce`: the blob field freezes at its initial layout, the foil gradient stops rotating, the hand-annotation wiggle disables, the shard iridescence still tracks cursor proximity (it's *spatial*, not *temporal*), the underline-draw on links resolves to a static underline, and the inline-expand interaction reduces to instant show/hide. The page remains fully usable as a quiet, classically-set broadsheet.

**Bias every implementation decision toward the warmth of cream paper, the gravity of justified Garamond, and the restraint of iridescence-as-edge.** Whenever a choice presents itself between *more colour / less colour*, choose less. Whenever a choice presents itself between *more motion / less motion*, choose less, but preserve the slow blob drift — the page must always feel *barely alive*, never frozen and never agitated. Whenever a choice presents itself between *more interactivity / more legibility*, choose legibility. The page is meant to be a **broadsheet you sit with for ten minutes** and finish with the slight feeling of having argued with someone smart.

## Uniqueness Notes

This design distinguishes itself from the existing corpus across the following axes. Every claim below is verifiable against `tools/design/frequency.sh` output dated 2026-05-09.

1. **F-pattern as a literary-broadsheet armature, not a marketing-page eye-track.** Only 3% of the corpus uses f-pattern at all, and the corpus's existing f-pattern uses are eye-track-style marketing layouts (heavy hero, scannable bullet rows). genshin.day uses the F at *three nested scales simultaneously* (page-as-F, entry-as-F, archive-stack-as-staggered-Fs) and binds it to a 720px justified Garamond reading column anchored to the left third. There is no precedent in the corpus for using F-pattern as a *broadsheet* armature.

2. **Garamond-classic typography (1% in registry) used as the dominant body voice, not as a luxury accent.** The corpus's rare Garamond uses are luxury-brand display moments. Here, Garamond is *the body type*, *the headline type*, *the wordmark*, *the colophon* — set as a 1640s Antwerp printer would have set it, with real small-caps, hanging punctuation, and iron-gall-ink colour. The classical typography is the *field on which dissent is registered*, not a decorative flourish.

3. **Edgy-rebellious tone (2% in registry) expressed through marginal annotation, not through punk graphics.** The two existing edgy-rebellious sites in the corpus express the tone through aggressive layout, sharp angles, or punk-poster type. genshin.day expresses it through a **rebellious reader's hand** — Caveat in hand purple, crossing out, underlining, disagreeing in the margins of a beautifully-set classical page. The rebellion here is the rebellion of a reader who *knows the text well enough to refuse it*, not of a graphic designer who wants to startle.

4. **Holographic (10% in registry) used exclusively as edge and clipped-text, never as fill.** The existing holographic sites in the corpus apply foil as backdrop fields, dichroic surface treatments, or large gradient washes. genshin.day applies foil **only** to: a 1px ring on the date stamp, the wordmark via `background-clip: text`, the shard outlines (1px stroke), and the underline-draw beneath italic links. The aesthetic refusal is deliberate — *iridescence as restraint*, never iridescence as spectacle.
