## Aesthetics and Tone

courts.studio is a **brutalist royal-court chamber lit only by candles**, where the four meanings of the word *court* — the law court, the royal court, the tennis court, the courting of a lover — are pressed flat against a single concrete wall and illuminated, one at a time, by a guttering taper. The aesthetic is **brutalist filtered through candle-atmospheric jewel-tone gloom**: raw-poured concrete textures, grid lines exposed like rebar, monumental Baskerville serifs cut into the slab — but the lighting is not the cold fluorescent of a Swiss agency or the purple-black of a Berlin techno-flyer. The lighting is **wax-lit**: a single warm jewel-toned flame source per chamber, casting amethyst-deep shadows across emerald-cold concrete, with garnet smoke drifting up and out of the viewport.

The tone is **energetic** in a very specific sense: not the dopamine-bright energy of a startup landing page, not the kinetic energy of a webgl experiment — but the *combustive* energy of a candle held to a match, of a courtier whispering treason, of a tennis serve at the apex of toss. Energy as **potential about to discharge**. Every chamber on this site holds its breath; the pulse-attention animation is the heartbeat audible inside that held breath.

This is a studio's portfolio site — courts.studio, the imagined practice of a single architect-illustrator who designs *court spaces* (legal, royal, athletic, romantic) and documents the work in candlelit illustrations she draws by hand at 3am. Visitors are not shoppers. They are guests admitted, late, into a chamber where work is laid out on a stone slab for inspection.

The mood references: **Tarkovsky's Andrei Rublev** (the candle-watch scene), **John Pawson's monastery at Nový Dvůr** (concrete and Cistercian quiet), **Hilma af Klint's altar paintings** (jewel-toned ritual color blocked into geometry), **Caravaggio's tenebrism** (single-source lighting, void around it), and **the ink wash drawings of Hiroshige** (the courtship of an unseen subject through candles and lanterns). It does *not* reference: brutalist neon-grids agency websites, Swiss-grid editorial, dopamine-warm landing pages, or any other 96%-frequency convention.

## Layout Motifs and Structure

**Chamber sequence and roles:**

**Vertical scroll only.** No horizontal sweeps, no carousels, no hijacked scroll velocity. Each chamber is exactly 100vh except Chamber VI which is 130vh to accommodate the overhead workshop view. Transition between chambers is a **180ms wax-fade**: as the previous chamber's bottom edge approaches the top of the viewport, its candle dims to extinction and a new candle ignites in the chamber below — choreographed by `IntersectionObserver` at threshold 0.92.

**No top navigation. No footer. No hamburger.** The seven Roman numerals are themselves the navigation: clicking any numeral teleports to that chamber. There is a fixed-position vertical list of seven 6px dots on the left edge at 24px from the viewport edge, each dot inheriting the active chamber's jewel-tone color when scrolled to.

**Negative space is not white.** Every void on this site is **dark concrete-emerald (#0E1B16)**, never white, never paper, never cream. The page has no white pixels; the candle flame is the lightest area on any plate, peaking at #FFE8B8 (a bone-warm).

## Typography and Palette

**Type system — Google Fonts only:**

- **Libre Baskerville (Regular, Italic, Bold)** — *the* voice of the site. Used for all chamber numerals (Roman, oldstyle figures), all chamber titles, all body running text, and the wordmark. Mono is at 11px, tracking 0.18em, uppercase. This is a tiny utility face; it never displaces Baskerville, never gets bigger than 11px, never appears outside Chambers I and VII labels and Chamber VII's address block.

No third or fourth display face. No handwritten font. No mono headline. The typographic discipline is intentionally severe: Baskerville carries 92% of the type weight, Cormorant italic carries 7%, JetBrains Mono carries 1%.

**Palette — Jewel-Tones in candle-tenebrism:**

The palette is built around **four jewel-tones each assigned to one of the four court meanings**, with two neutral concrete shades and one warm-bone candle-flame tone.

- **#0E1B16 — Concrete Emerald** (the wall, the void, the 78%-of-pixels base). A green-black, formed by mixing #0A1A14 deep forest with a 6% black overlay. Functions as the page background and the unlit areas of every chamber.

**Palette discipline:** Each chamber uses *exactly one jewel-tone plus the two concrete tones plus candle-bone plus wax-cream*. ## Imagery and Motifs

Every visual asset on this site is **custom-illustrated, hand-drawn, monochromatic-line** — no photography, no 3D renders, no stock vector, no AI generators. The illustrations are styled as if drawn by the studio's proprietor at 3am with a 0.3mm Rotring on toned paper, then digitized.

At every grid intersection, a 2px circular impression mark (mimicking the embedded form-tie cone). The texture is generated once, baked to a static SVG asset (under 18kb), and reused across all seven chambers — the wall is the same wall, the chambers are illuminated regions of it.

**The Dust (z-2 plane, every chamber).** Custom 1px particle drift, rendered in canvas, tinted to match the active chamber's jewel-tone. 80–120 motes per chamber. Physics: upward drift 4–7px/sec, lateral random-walk ±0.4px/sec, opacity randomized 0.18–0.46. Particles spawn from the candle's base and drift up and off the top of the viewport.

**Decorative motifs (across the site):**

- **Form-tie circles**: 2px circles at every wall-grid intersection. The 12 visible at any moment.
- **Hairline rules**: A 0.6px wax-cream hairline frames each illustration at 24px offset, like a museum mat-line.
- **Roman numeral negative-space carving**: The chamber-numeral cut into the wall reveals the jewel-tone field beneath it, with an inset 1.5px shadow at the cut's left and top edges suggesting depth.

3. **Chambers III, IV, V** — same template, with crown/sapphire, racket/topaz, letter/amethyst respectively. Each has its own marginalia gloss in Cormorant Italic.
4. **Chamber VI — The Workshop.** The five layered planes flatten into a single 130vh top-down view of the studio table. The candle is at center, the four artifacts arranged at 12-3-6-9-o'clock positions. ## Uniqueness Notes

This design's seven differentiators, each a deliberate departure from the patterns documented in the frequency analysis:

The site renders entirely in SVG and 1.4kb of canvas. This is a maximalist commitment to illustration in a corpus dominated by photographic backgrounds.

4. **Layered-depth implemented as five literal z-planes with CSS perspective, not as decoupled parallax sections.** Layered-depth is at 9% in the layout frequency, and most implementations use it as a section-stacking metaphor. courts.studio implements layered-depth with a real `perspective: 1400px` 3D rig and five distinct `translateZ()` planes per chamber, each parallax-driven at a different rate. Walking down the page is *literally* walking forward in 3D space toward each chamber's central artifact. The wall recedes; the candle is mid-depth; the artifact moves toward the viewer; the numeral is etched into the wall at the back-most plane. No other layered-depth site in the corpus uses CSS 3D perspective as the structural rig.

5. **Jewel-tones as one-per-chamber discipline, never blended.** Jewel-tones are at 3% in the palette frequency, and the existing 3% tends to use jewel-tone as a multi-color mid-page accent palette. courts.studio assigns **exactly one jewel-tone per content chamber** (garnet, sapphire, topaz, amethyst — one each for the four meanings of "court"), and the four jewel-tones **never appear together except in Chamber VI's overhead workshop view**, where they appear as four discrete shadow-pools, never overlapping. This is jewel-tone as **chromatic semaphore**, not as palette accent.
