## Aesthetics and Tone

cosplay.quest is **a Scandinavian forest-school field journal for the costumed art of becoming someone else** — a long quiet scroll that pretends to be a *flora-och-fauna fältbok* (flora-and-fauna fieldbook) from a fictional Nordic crafts academy, *Skogsklädnad Akademi* ("forest-clothing academy"), where the students do not study moss or birds but the seasonal migration of *characters* — who they are, what they wear, and where, in the forest of pop-culture, they are sighted.

The site adopts the visual hush of a Swedish object-design catalogue (think the gentle hand of *Form magasin*, the textbook clarity of a Klippan cooperative print, the optimism of Astrid Lindgren end-papers) and applies it to **the act of cosplay as fieldwork**. Every cosplayer is a "specimen," every reference photograph is a "sighting," every wig and seam is a *fundord* (find-word) catalogued in a column of pale ink. Where most cosplay sites lean costume-neon-anime-glow, this one is the opposite of that culture's loudness: it is **quiet, sunlit, optimistic, and patient** — the kind of room where a sewing machine clicks softly under a north window, where a flat brush of watercolour dries on a wooden bench, where a child sits cross-legged on a rag-rug threading a paper crown.

The underlying tone is **optimistic-bright** (5% of corpus — chosen so the site does not collapse into the more common pastoral-romantic 27% reading of "nature stuff"). Optimism here is *clear-eyed* and *Scandinavian-pragmatic*: not toothpaste-cheerful, not dopamine-saturated. It is the optimism of a long midsummer evening when the sky holds light past 11pm — *lagom* hopeful, neither effusive nor ironic. The tagline that runs as a typographic loop in the masthead is **"klä om världen"** ("re-clothe the world"), which captures cosplay's gentle proposition: that anyone can put on a different shape and be received as it.

The primary inspirations are: **Sven Nordqvist's "Pettson och Findus" end-papers** (their crowded but legible hand-drawn margins of small tools and creatures), **Iittala's pre-1990 catalogue typography** (centred caption, generous baseline, rules of thin sepia), **the Klippan rag-rug colour cards** of the 1970s (pinned-paper colour swatches with a hole-punch), and **Carl Larsson's watercolour interiors at Sundborn** (the open windows, the flat-coloured furniture, the children with paper crowns). The mood is *late afternoon in late May, a workshop after class, sleeves rolled up, kettle on*.

This is not a cosplay-store. There is no shop. There is no pricing. There is no leaderboard. cosplay.quest **is a scroll-through fieldbook of nine "sightings"** — nine costumed personas catalogued as if they were forest specimens — interleaved with a *six-page primer* on how to begin. The tone is unfailingly encouraging: every page closes with a small hand-lettered phrase like *"och du kan också"* ("and you also can").

## Layout Motifs and Structure

The dominant layout is **minimal-navigation** (7% of corpus — explicitly chosen because navigation-heavy 91% full-bleed and 82% centred patterns dominate the registry; this site refuses both a hero shot and a navbar). There is, in fact, **no top navigation at all**. The reader scrolls a single long column or follows the parallax-anchored side-margin of *fundord* (find-words) up and down the page using a soft scroll that snaps to plate-headings.

**Page model — the "fieldbook signature."**

The whole site is rendered as one continuous *signature* (a Swedish notebook quire of 16 leaves, recto-verso). On a desktop browser the content occupies a fixed inner page-block 720px wide (about the width of a real Klippan portfolio sheet), centred on the viewport, with a generous *paper-margin* of forest-tinted negative space on either side. The paper-margin is **alive**: this is where the parallax happens.

**Reference frame.** Desktop 1440×900, tablet 1024×1366, mobile 390×844.

**Grid (paper).**
- One inner column 720px wide on desktop (centred), 92vw on mobile (capped at 720px).
- Outer paper-margins fill the viewport on either side, minimum 96px each side at 1024px width.
- Vertical baseline grid of 8px; section spacing in multiples of 32px.
- A *pencil-grey* (#3A4A36 at 6% alpha) ruled line at every 8th baseline — visible, deliberate, **a fieldbook ruling**, never a CSS-debugger artefact.

**Section structure (top to bottom).**

1. *Pärm* (cover) — single h1 set in a hand-drawn watercolour wreath of pine sprigs and threaded needles. No image. The wreath is inline-SVG drawn live in CSS-strokes. One small kinetic element: the tagline "klä om världen" ticks in by-letter (kinetic-animated) over the first 1.4s.
2. *Förord* (foreword) — three short paragraphs describing the academy and what the reader is about to scroll. Hand-set drop-cap **K** in burnt-sepia.
3. *Specimen 01* through *Specimen 09* — nine "sightings," each occupying about 1.6 viewports at desktop. Each specimen plate has the same internal structure: (a) Latin-style binomial in a serif rule (e.g. *Persona forestiae nordica* — "northern forest persona"), (b) a hand-drawn full-figure inline-SVG of the costumed character, (c) a left-margin fundord column, (d) a right-margin habitat note, (e) a hand-lettered closing line. There are no photographs; all imagery is hand-drawn SVG.
4. *Lärobok* (primer) — a six-leaf hand-bound section with the headings *Mått* (measure), *Ull* (wool), *Mönster* (pattern), *Söm* (seam), *Pruva* (fitting), *Fält* (going out). Each leaf is a one-screen vignette with a kinetic-animated diagram.
5. *Kolophon* — colophon with a hand-lettered sign-off, the date in Swedish (e.g. *femte maj tjugohundratjugosex*), and a small drawn moss-stamp.

**The parallax margins (deliberate).**
Parallax is the most overused motif in the registry (95%). cosplay.quest uses it **anti-canonically**: the centre column does not parallax. Only the *paper-margins* parallax, and they parallax very slowly (0.18× viewport speed), drifting hand-drawn marginalia upward as the reader scrolls down — a passing kingfisher, a pinned button, a roll of fabric on a cart, a child's paper crown, the silhouette of a sewing machine. These are the page's *fundord-ekostöd* (find-word echo-supports). Most are inline SVG. None are interactive. They are scenery, not decoration.

**Reading-line snap.**
The vertical scroll snaps softly (CSS `scroll-snap-type: y proximity`) to specimen-headings only. Reading inside a specimen does not snap; only the major section-breaks do. This makes the page feel like turning the *flikar* (tabs) of a real fieldbook.

**No hero, no nav, no pricing, no CTA.**
The home is the foreword, not a hero. There is no top navbar, no sticky button, no "Sign Up" — at most a single soft anchor in the colophon labelled *brevväxling* ("correspondence") that reveals an email-address rendered as a hand-traced ink-stamp. There is no pricing block, no stat-grid, no comparison table, no testimonial carousel.

## Typography and Palette

**Type stack — Google Fonts only, all four are confirmed available on Google Fonts.**

- **Fraunces (italic 400 and 600, opsz 144 display)** — the textbook serif, set as the running body, 18px / 1.65 on desktop, 17px / 1.6 on mobile, with `font-optical-sizing: auto` so the larger headings draw on the 144-opsz cut. Fraunces gives a slightly *wonky*, slightly *Klippan-rag-rug* warmth — the Roman still feels classical but the curves remember a printing block. Used for body, foreword, and binomial italic captions.
- **Reenie Beanie (regular 400)** — the *hand-lettered marginalia*. This is the only handwritten face in the stack and it carries the closing lines, the fundord, the soft "och du kan också" closers, and the page-numbers in the corner. (Handwritten typography is at 31% of the corpus; here it is used sparingly so it stays felt rather than performed.)
- **Cormorant Garamond (medium 500 small-caps)** — the section-headings, set in small-caps at 14px letter-spacing 0.18em. *FÖRORD*, *SPECIMEN 01*, *LÄROBOK*, *KOLOPHON*. The small-cap rule and the rule-line beneath every heading are calibrated together (the rule is the cap-height of the small-cap glyph, and runs the full 720px column).
- **Space Mono (regular 400)** — the only monospace, used for the **kinetic-animated** ticker at the masthead and the date-stamps in the colophon. Mono is at 96% of corpus — but it is used here for a single sentence, in a single context, at 13px, never as the body. It is the page's only nod to modernity, as if the academy had a typewriter in the secretary's office.

**Type rules.**

- The body never goes wider than the 720px column; this gives a measure of about 70 characters at the chosen size, in line with the Bringhurst recommendation.
- Every section-heading sits in 32px of clear baseline above and below.
- Drop-caps (one per section) are set in Cormorant Garamond at 5× cap-height, in *burnt-sepia* (#7C3F1A), with their right edge cleanly aligned to the body's left margin (i.e. the drop-cap hangs into the paper-margin — a fieldbook gesture).
- Italics are reserved for binomials and Swedish words; English words run upright. The reader can therefore *read the rhythm of the language change*.

**Palette — forest-green (5% of corpus, deliberately not the gradient-warm 96%/97% pair).**

Eight tokens, every value is a real hex.

- `--paper-light`  **#F2EFE3**  the off-white of unprimed linen-paper, the page ground.
- `--paper-warm`   **#E7E1CE**  the slightly oxidised inner-leaf, used for plate-headers and primer-leaf grounds.

- `--forest-deep` **#234029**  the page's deep ground voice; used only for the closing colophon and the wreath-strokes.
- `--sepia-burnt** **#7C3F1A**  the burnt-sepia ink, drop-caps and binomial italics. (Note: in CSS this token name uses a hyphen.)
- `--lingon-red`   **#A53030**  Swedish lingonberry — the single accent, a stitched marker on every plate-binomial.
- `--sky-noon`     **#D9E6E1**  the cool-light of a north window, used as the reading hover-tint.

**Contrast pairs (the only allowed combinations).**

- text on paper-light: forest-deep (#234029 on #F2EFE3).
- italic binomials: sepia-burnt on paper-warm (#7C3F1A on #E7E1CE).
- pencil-rule baseline: moss-pale at 50% alpha on paper-light.
- hand-lettered marginalia: forest-deep on paper-light at 88% alpha.
- single accent (lingon-red): used in **at most one** mark per plate — a stitched cross, a thread loop, a numeral.

No gradient is used anywhere — explicitly contrary to the 97% gradient prevalence in the corpus. The page is **flat watercolour and ink**, not Photoshop airbrush.

## Imagery and Motifs

cosplay.quest's primary imagery token is **hand-drawn** (96% of corpus — but used here in a way that *doesn't look like the corpus*: not "marker doodles around a SaaS hero," but **botanical-fieldbook plates, hand-traced character-figures, watercolour swatches with pinholes**). The secondary motif is **retro-patterns** (4% of corpus, deliberately underused) realised as **Klippan-style 1970s rag-rug pattern bands** — narrow horizontal pattern strips between sections that act as section-dividers. The deliberate non-use is photography (98% of corpus): there are **zero photographs** on this site.

**The nine specimen plates (all inline SVG, hand-drawn).**

Each specimen is a costumed character drawn full-figure as a fieldbook specimen. Drawing rules:

- Stroke: 1.5px, in `--forest-deep`, with `stroke-linecap: round`.
- Fill: flat watercolour washes in `--moss-mid`, `--moss-pale`, `--sepia-burnt`, `--paper-warm`, never gradients. Each wash uses a `<filter>` with `feTurbulence` (baseFrequency 0.65) at 8% displacement to give the wash a *paper-bleed* edge.
- Each figure is 280px tall (about half-column), centred in the column.
- The Latin-style binomial sits below the figure in italic Fraunces, e.g. *Persona forestiae nordica*, *Persona urbana ferroviaria*, *Persona theatralis lunaris*.
- Below the binomial, three hand-drawn icons in a row: a **wig swatch** (a small loop of plotted hair), a **fabric swatch** (an 18×18 mm rectangle with a stitched edge), and a **prop-mark** (a small inline-drawn object — a paper sword, a kettle, a lantern, a key).
- A small `--lingon-red` cross-stitch near the binomial marks "verified sighting." Only one cross-stitch per plate. It is the page's only red.

**Marginalia (the parallax cargo).**

The paper-margins drift slowly upward as the reader scrolls. Twenty-two SVG marginalia are seeded into the margins, each anchored to a baseline-multiple. They include: a kingfisher mid-dive, a hand holding pinking-shears, a thimble on a thread, a moss-stone with a paper crown, a sewing-machine silhouette, a small mushroom marked *"karljohan"*, a coil of rope, a folded sheet of pattern-paper, a child's wooden horse, a kettle with steam in three short curl-strokes, a roll of woven Klippan ribbon, a wax-stamp of the academy crest, an ink-quill, a snail with a paper hat, a half-eaten cinnamon bun (*kanelbulle*), a small jar marked *blå (dye)*, a cluster of three pine cones, an open *fältbok*, a hand-tied bow of ribbon, a button on a thread, a cross-stitched heart, a small folded paper boat. Each is monochrome moss or sepia. They drift, they do not animate. The drift is the animation.

**Retro-pattern bands (deliberate, underused).**

Between each major section sits a 32px-tall horizontal band rendered as a hand-drawn Klippan-style geometric repeat: *pinwheels*, *flikar*, *kvadrater*, *blommor*, *vågor*, *löv*, *stjärnor*. Six bands across the page, six different patterns, each a 32×32 SVG `<pattern>` tiled across the column-width. The bands are coloured *moss-pale on paper-light* with a single *lingon-red* accent thread. They function as the page's *årsringar* — annual rings, marking time as the reader moves through the sections.

**The wreath cover.**

The masthead has no image. The h1 *cosplay.quest* sits inside a hand-drawn wreath of pine, lingonberry, and threaded needles. The wreath is inline SVG, drawn in `--forest-deep` strokes with `--moss-mid` watercolour washes, and on first paint the wreath is animated **by stroke** (path-draw-svg, 25% of corpus — used here, not avoided, because path-drawing is the single appropriate primitive for a hand-drawn fieldbook): the strokes draw in over 2.4s, left-to-right, like a calligrapher closing a circle. After the wreath finishes drawing, the lingonberries fill in by feTurbulence-displaced watercolour wash. After the berries fill, the kinetic-animated tagline ticks across in Space Mono.

**No icons-as-UI, no avatars, no photo-cards, no testimonials, no logos-of-brands, no stock-vector flat-illustrations.** The site is one drawing.

## Prompts for Implementation

Build cosplay.quest as **one HTML file, one CSS file, one ES module** — no framework, no router, no build step, no service worker, no analytics. Total uncompressed bundle target under **70KB** (most of the byte-budget is the inline SVG of the nine specimens; their geometry must be hand-tuned to be readable but not lush). The page is a single long scroll. There is no navigation menu. The reader scrolls or does not.

**CSS architecture (single file, custom properties, no preprocessor).**

- Root tokens: the eight palette hexes above, plus `--measure: 720px`, `--baseline: 8px`, `--rhythm: calc(var(--baseline) * 4)`.
- Body: `background: var(--paper-light); color: var(--forest-deep); font-family: 'Fraunces', serif; font-size: 18px; line-height: 1.65; font-optical-sizing: auto;`.
- The 8px baseline ruling is rendered with a repeating linear-gradient on `body::before`, fixed-position, low alpha, behind the reading column.
- `.parm`, `section`, `.specimen`, `.larobok`, `footer` are all 720px-wide, centred, with `padding-block: var(--rhythm)`.
- `.parallax-margin.left` / `.right` are absolutely positioned outside the column (flexbox with `flex: 1` on the outer wrapper), `position: sticky; top: 0; height: 100vh; overflow: hidden;` — and each marginalia child is `position: absolute` with a `transform: translateY()` driven by a single rAF on scroll. **Drift speed 0.18× viewport.**
- Pattern-bands: `<hr class="pattern-band" data-band="…">` is styled as a 32px-tall block with `background-image: url("data:image/svg+xml;utf8,<svg>…</svg>")` repeated horizontally. Six different SVG pattern data-URIs, one per `data-band` value. No external file.
- No JS animations on imagery — the specimens are static. The only animations are: (1) the masthead wreath stroke-draw on load, (2) the tagline ticker on load, (3) the parallax-margin drift, and (4) the soft scroll-snap.

**JS module — minimal, ~80 lines.**

1. **Wreath stroke-draw** — on `DOMContentLoaded`, get all `<path>` inside `.wreath` and apply `stroke-dasharray: var(--len); stroke-dashoffset: var(--len); animation: draw 2.4s ease-out forwards;` with a per-path delay so the wreath closes left-to-right.
2. **Tagline kinetic ticker** — `[data-kinetic]` text is wrapped per-letter into `<span>` and each letter slides up and fades in with a 24ms stagger. Total ≈400ms. Letters use `font-family: 'Space Mono'`. After completion the wrapper is left as plain text for crawlers.
3. **Parallax margins** — single `requestAnimationFrame` loop reads `window.scrollY` and applies `transform: translate3d(0, calc(-1 * var(--scrollY) * 0.18px), 0)` to `.parallax-margin > *`. Pause when `prefers-reduced-motion: reduce`.
4. **Drop-cap reveal** — each section's drop-cap fades from `--paper-warm` to `--sepia-burnt` over 600ms when the section enters the viewport (IntersectionObserver, threshold 0.25). One observer for the whole document.
5. **Pattern-band reveal** — when a `.pattern-band` enters the viewport, the SVG `<pattern>` `feTurbulence` `baseFrequency` is animated from 1.2 to 0.65 over 800ms (the band "settles" into its weave). Implemented with `requestAnimationFrame`, no library.

**Storytelling guidance.**

The site is a *book*. Read it as a book. The reader's job is to scroll, to look at one specimen at a time, to read the binomial out loud (some of them are funny), and to feel encouraged. There is no decision to make at the end — there is no "sign up." There is, at the very bottom, the small `brevväxling` link, which on hover reveals a hand-traced ink-stamp with an email address. That is the only call to anything.

**Avoid.** No CTAs. No pricing block. No stat-grid. No testimonials carousel. No comparison table. No newsletter modal. No cookie banner that is a banner (a one-line footer note is enough). No hero image. No "as-seen-in" logo strip. No trending-now feed. No comment section. No reactions. No scoreboards. No social-share row.

**Bias toward full-screen narrative experience.** The page is a single full-bleed reading column with cinematic margins. Each specimen plate occupies about 1.6 viewports — large enough that the reader stops scrolling for it. The nine specimens together compose a *forest catalogue*; the lärobok primer is a *manual*; the kolophon is a *signature*. The reader leaves the page knowing they have read a book.

## Uniqueness Notes

This design's deliberate departures from the 140 designs already in the registry, and from common interpretations of every token in its seed:

1. **Scandinavian as fieldbook, not as IKEA-flat-pack.** Scandinavian is at 2% of the corpus. Where other Scandinavian designs read as "white background, Inter, lots of negative space," cosplay.quest is **specifically Swedish 1970s cooperative-craft Scandinavian**: Klippan rag-rug colour cards, *Form magasin* catalogue typography, Carl Larsson watercolour interiors. The site rejects the Inter-on-white minimalism that Scandinavian is usually flattened into and reaches further back, into a textile-and-object-craft vocabulary that Swedish readers will recognise as deeply native and that the global Scandinavian-minimal trend has erased.

2. **Cosplay without anime-glow.** The whole .quest tld and the term "cosplay" are visually associated with neon-saturation, glassmorphism, glitch-art, and the 11% holographic / 22% cyberpunk tokens. cosplay.quest is **the opposite of that**: matte paper, watercolour wash, lingonberry-and-moss, no gradient, no neon, no glow, no blur. The argument the design makes is that *cosplay is a craft tradition* — sewing, dyeing, fitting, going out into the world — and deserves the visual register of *craft*, not the visual register of *the screen the character lives on*. Zero of the 140 designs apply this inversion.

3. **Parallax used anti-canonically.** Parallax is at 95% of corpus, the most overused single motif. Standard practice is to parallax the *content* (a hero image moves, a section card lifts as you scroll). cosplay.quest **never parallaxes the content**: only the paper-margins parallax, and only the marginalia inside them, and only at 0.18× very slow drift. The reading column is rock-still. This makes the parallax feel like the world walking by *outside the window of the workshop* while the reader stays at the desk — a wholly different emotional reading of the technique.

4. **No photography (98% corpus inversion).** The site contains no photographic image of any kind. Every figure is hand-drawn inline SVG, every wash is feTurbulence-displaced watercolour. This is the largest single inversion of corpus norms in the registry: where 98% of designs lean on photography, cosplay.quest leans on drawing.

5. **No gradient, no warm-gradient pair (97% / 96% corpus inversion).** The palette is **flat ink and watercolour**, eight discrete hex values, no `linear-gradient()` anywhere in the CSS. This is unusual; gradient is the registry's near-universal default. cosplay.quest uses it zero times.

6. **Forest-green as the *only* dominant family (5% of corpus).** The palette is anchored on a forest-green ground (#234029, #5B7A4A, #A8B59A) with sepia-burnt (#7C3F1A) and a single lingon-red (#A53030) accent. No blue. No purple. No neon. No gradient sky. The rare forest-green token is taken at its word.

7. **Kinetic typography used in **one** place, not as a pervasive device (2% of corpus).** Kinetic-animated is rare in the corpus and almost always rendered as a hero-massive-text effect. Here it is a single 13px Space Mono ticker at the masthead — *klä om världen* — that animates once and then is still. Restraint, not performance.

8. **Optimistic-bright tone read as Swedish midsummer, not as toothpaste-cheer (5% of corpus).** Optimism on cosplay.quest is *clear-eyed and patient*, the optimism of a long Nordic summer evening, not the optimism of a startup landing page. The site closes every section with *och du kan också* ("and you also can"). It encourages without selling.

9. **Retro-patterns used as section-dividers, not as backgrounds or hero-fills (4% of corpus).** Retro-patterns appears infrequently and almost always as a maximalist all-over field. cosplay.quest uses it as **six 32px horizontal bands**, one between each major section, drawn as 1970s Klippan rag-rug repeats in moss-pale and lingon-red. It is *årsringar* — annual rings.

10. **Minimal-navigation taken to its limit (7% of corpus).** Where minimal-navigation usually means "a small fixed nav with three items," cosplay.quest has **literally no navigation at all** — no top bar, no sticky button, no hamburger, no logo-link, no breadcrumbs. The reader scrolls. The single soft anchor in the colophon is the only link. This is one of the strictest navigational reductions in the registry.
