a hand-printed broadside about failure & craft

this one took three years.
FIRST BALL
THWUMP

/ run 1 /
what i drop

+ the second monitor at 4am, when the email modal swallows three days of staging migrations. // gone.

+ a feature flag for the 0.3% of users who pay our salaries. // quietly.

+ the test suite, every fourth tuesday, when CI runs at 4x parallelism and the timestamps collide.

+ the side project from 2021. seven readme drafts. zero commits since february.

+ the database password to a slack channel that, in retrospect, had thirty-two people in it.

+ sleep. mostly sleep. ← this one bit me

+ a promise to refactor the auth flow "next sprint" — first made in Q3 2022.

+ the certainty that any of this is going to ship.

PLOP.

/ run 2 /
what stays in the air

still afloat. mostly.
MAIN BALL
KERSPLAT

/ run 3 /
what i caught

Shipped a 14-line bugfix that retired a six-year intercom thread.

Wrote a build cache that finally, after four attempts, did not corrupt itself on Tuesdays.

Gave a talk where exactly one stranger said "this changed how i think." that was enough.

Learned to stop calling the side project "almost done."

caught. just barely.
